Home Health Care Keeps Seniors Home

There are many things that seniors enjoy. They often enjoy the benefits of their life long work. They also enjoy their independence. As they age, many of their loved ones worry about their ability to stay in their home alone. Rather than give up their independence, they will investigate the options of home health care to satisfy their concerns.

As seniors advance in age, they can sometimes experience age related issues. Sometimes they aren’t able to do things they used to because they don’t have the energy to do them. Families don’t like seeing their loved ones lose the ability to do things and it makes them wonder if they are able to care for themselves in a sufficient manner. Instead of seniors bowing to pressure and moving into a nursing home, they find an agency that specializes in home health care and continue to live in their home.

When seniors look to find a home health care agency, they find there are many agencies that can help them. These agencies have many different services available to for them to choose from. When seniors are ready to decide, they normally will make an appointment to speak with a representative that can guide them through the process.

As the agency representative meets with their prospective client, they listen to the things that are being said. It is important for them to get a clear understanding of what the client needs. When seniors are looking for a home health care professional, not only are they answering questions, they are asking many questions so they can get an understanding of the programs and benefits.

Seniors are normally very honest in the things they need help with. They want to continue to live independently and to have a home health care professional work with them will ensure they are able to do so for as long as possible. These seniors have to consider many different things before they start the service.

Some seniors are in very good health. They are able to live independently and care for themselves very well. They sometimes have trouble doing certain things around their home because of their age but they can still manage their household. For seniors in this situation, having a home health care professional visit once a week may be ideal. They can help with errands that need to be run, correspondence or just to check their health. Seniors enjoy the help and they don’t feel they are being intruded upon.

There are other seniors that need more help from their home health care professional. Some seniors unfortunately have different medical or age related problems that interfere in their ability to care for themselves. Families worry and try to help them as much as possible but sometimes it’s not enough. For seniors in this position, they need a home health care professional to visit daily, helping with basic household chores and ensuring they are in good health. Many home care professionals also assist their clients with basic life skill activities such as bathing, brushing their teeth or even cooking.

Once seniors have decided the amount of help they need, the make arrangements with the home health care agency of their choice. These agencies are familiar with the struggles many seniors face and strive to ensure they are able to continue enjoying life and good health. Their families are relieved that their loved ones are able to continue their independence but allowing a medical professional to help.

Before the Affordable Health Care Act, They Were Locked Out

(Many provisions of the Affordable Health Care Act have already kicked in before full implementation of the law which takes effect in 2014.)

Locked out of medical care, that is. Who? Individuals with pre-existing conditions. Now, 50,000 of them have healthcare coverage via the Pre-Existing Condition Insurance Plan (PCIP) in their state. This is a temporary high-risk health insurance program that makes healthcare not only available but much more affordable.

For example, a patient named Deborah fell victim to a back injury. It left her unemployed and unable to afford health insurance premiums. However, when she discovered the Michigan PCIP plan, she was able to enroll in it, receive the back surgery she needed and get on the road to recovery.

PCIP makes a difference. It has allowed many Americans to get connected to health insurance and receive the medical care they sorely need. That’s because PCIP enrollees can receive that care immediately.

The way it works is that states have the option of operating this new program in their state. However, if a state has chosen not to do so, the Department of Health and Human Services has established a plan in that state. This insurance serves as a bridge to 2014. That’s when all discrimination against pre-existing conditions will be prohibited.

You can see how your state administers PCIP with either their own program or one established by the Department of Health and Human Services by clicking on the link below.

Insurance up to Age 26

Another plus of the Affordable Health Care Act that has been in effect since 2010 is where young adults are allowed to remain on their parent’s health plan until they turn 26 (unless the young adult is offered insurance at work).

Health Care Premium Expenses

Effective on January 1st, 2011, the law requires that at least 85% of the premium collected by insurance companies administering large employer plans be spent on health care services and quality improvement for health care.

For individual and small employer plans, 80% of the premiums must be spent on improving health care services.

It this provision is not met, rebates must be given to consumers.

Discount Prescription Drugs for Seniors

Also In 2011, seniors who reach the coverage gap will receive a 50 percent discount when they buy Medicare Part D covered brand-name prescription drugs.

Over the next ten years and until the coverage gap is closed in 2020, seniors will receive additional savings on generic and brand-name drugs.

Home Health Care Benefits

As families continue to grow and expand, there are many additional responsibilities that have to be addressed. When a loved one is ill and needs additional help, it can be very hard for families to accommodate their needs. When families find themselves in this predicament, they often reach out to an agency that specializes in home health care.

Home health care can mean different things to different people. The agency that specializes in this type of health care understands this concept and makes sure they understand their clients’ needs before they send a caregiver to their homes. When families feel they need help, their first step is usually to call one of these agencies and schedule an appointment to speak with a representative.

Families normally go to an agency to discuss their options and understand exactly how this can benefit their loved one. The agency representative takes the time to listen to the concerns their clients have and what they feel their loved one needs. They also make sure to ask many questions so they understand what they need to provide.

Families are comfortable working with agencies for different reasons. Many families feel that these are professionals and they have many different resources that could benefit their loved ones. They are also very concerned about their loved ones safety. When a home health care professional is selected from an agency, families know they have passed a strict background check and thorough interview process.

This can mean different things to different families. There are families with loved ones that are gravely ill. When these families ask for a home health care professional, they are often there to monitor their health and many other things. This is a situation that the health care professional may have to check on their client once per day.

In other instances home health care professionals only need to see their clients once a week. In these situations, the clients are fairly healthy and able to live independently. They may need help in running errands or doing things around their home due to different medical and health issues. They are able to function well by themselves but families prefer that a medical professional check on them.

There are even some situations that a home health care professional is required to stay with their client all day. In these cases, family members aren’t able to be with their loved one during that time and they have requested a health caregiver come into their home. This can happen whenever a loved one will be left alone and they shouldn’t be or this can be a part of their daily routine. It all depends upon what the client needs.

When families are made aware of the different options and benefits they have with home health care agencies, they are able to decide what will help their loved one the best. Many of these families take a moment to discuss what they want and then they make arrangements with the agency to start the care. The decision to use these agencies to ensure their loved one receives the best care possible is a daily reminder of their love and dedication to their loved ones.

Home Health Care Agency Tips

Getting home health care services is an investment. It would be something that your family would be considering for a long time. With this, you need to make sure that your care services are appropriate for the care recipient. You should also look at the other details of the agency when it comes to the professionals that they are hiring.

The first thing you need to do is find a list of accredited and licensed agencies. This would give you the basic assurance that you would be getting the right and the best kind of home health care for your folks.

Once you get this list, it would be best to make a shortlist in terms of their proximity to your home. This way, you can take time to visit them and also research about them. You can go to the location and check it out yourself. You should know how long the agency has been in operation so far so that you would be able to qualify how they would serve the purpose of caring for your folks.

Reference checks are a must. You need to be sure that the care worker is licensed and also comes from a clean background. So you should also make it a point to ask what specific methods your home health care agency uses when it comes to hiring their health professionals.

Speaking of references, you should also ask if they get in touch with specific agencies or professionals for the said background information. This would also help you understand how well-affiliated they are with other networks.

You should also look at the specific services being offered by the home health care agency. Make sure that they have what your folks need and what the doctor would have to prescribe to them. It is important that the care provided in the agency also coordinates well with your folks’ medical condition.

Once you have zeroed in on your home health care agency, better book an appointment with them. This way you can discuss in person all the necessary things that you would want to ask and clarify. You should also ask if you can be given the chance to choose the professional to work with your folks.

Choosing the right home health care agency is something you need to take time with. You need to make sure that you are doing the right thing and that you are making the right investment.

Understanding the Benefits of Home Health Care

Home health care is a must for people who are currently in the process of rehabilitation. This is also an option that people can take for their senior elders. Most people think that this type of living conditions always refers to having someone live-in the same home as the patient but actually, there are different ways in which this setup is made possible.

But the truth is that there are different types of services that home health care can render, depending on what your needs are. It’s also not necessary to have the caretaker live in your home if that is not the setup that you like. The first most important thing to do would be to identify what your needs are and who the patient will be.

Home health care is often about skilled care nursing which is facilitated on a part-time or skilled basis. General assisted care is often being implemented but on top of this, there are other services too that can be offered such as physical therapy as well as occupational therapy. You can also ask for other medical social services to be included in the program.

In relation to these types of services, there are also several types of care professionals who can be offered to you by the care agencies. On a general level, there are care aides who are perfect for people who are in need of assisted living. They can also do some light housekeeping duties for the patient such as cooking and cleaning the home, even doing some groceries.

Depending on the case of the patient, a nurse may also be assigned to your home. However, nurses for home health care often follow a specific schedule and visit on an intermittent basis. But there are also agencies where hiring a nurse, who lives with the patient, is made possible. Rates of this kind might be more expensive but worth it.

When there is a nurse involved or a health aide to live with the patient, the agency often coordinates this with the client first. The client is sometimes given the opportunity to actually speak with the qualified care professionals to help assess the best option among them. The client may also be given the freedom to suggest bits and pieces in the program.

You may have noticed the relevance of agencies in the home health care setup. They are actually the institutions whom you could turn to for your needs. These agencies are great because they can become the point of contact for your questions and other needs.

Home health care is a long-term process. So before you get into this, better make sure that you go through the details first and that you are able to understand the implications it will have on your family.

The Basics of Home Health Care

Home health care can be defined as health related services that are given at home. The industry usually includes a wide array of services. The convenience, affordability and benefits of this field many times outweigh other available options for care, and for this reason, it has grown in popularity.

Examples of home health care may include physical therapy, occupational therapy, speech therapy, nursing care, and plenty more. In fact the list is endless, since it’s as relative as the various types of medical services that everyday people need.

Patients can choose between caregivers that live in or those who work on separate shifts. A paraplegic patient for example, may require around the clock health care, whereas someone that might be recovering from a leg injury may need only a few hours of doctor recommended physical therapy per day. Guardians of ailing individuals can make their selections based on individual needs. Doctors may sometimes intervene to recommend or prescribe a specific care, so likewise, it’s based on a number of factors.

People who might need home assistance come in all ages and conditions. A victim of a car accident for example, may need several services in order to recover. An aging parent who suffers from a condition that affects memory may mean they need to be watched constantly to prevent hazards to themselves or society.

The cost comparison when sided with a hospital or medical facility can be less expensive or more costly depending on the provider being used. Before selecting this option, it’s important to consider if the patient’s insurance plan covers such services. It’s actually very popular with Medicare, but it would be wise to first check with an agent before accumulating a very hefty medical bill in hopes you’re covered.

The dynamics of the field are huge as mentioned, due to the fact that there are so many forms of medical needs. Home health aides for instance, fall under the health care umbrella because they make daily living easier at home. These specialists can perform non-medical tasks such as showering, preparing meals, giving medications, transporting, cleaning, among many other chores. On the other hand, a certified nurse should always administer injections, tube feedings or wound dressings.

Other factors to consider include checking the reputation of the home health care provider being hired. You may choose to work with an agency or use an independent aide. Background checks and verification of certifications should always be performed. After all, the safety of a loved one always comes first.

Lastly home health care is a great alternative to hospitals, nursing homes, and assisted living facilities, given that the recipients will be more comfortable in environments that they are more familiar with.

Provide Home Health Care

Home health care refers to the process of having a health care provider, usually a nurse or a nurse assistant, come to the home of a person who is elderly or disabled and help them with basic daily activities that due to their age and disability they are unable to perform themselves.

It can take many forms, depending on the extent of assistance the patient requires. For some patients, basic assistance with housework and meal preparation is the extent of their need. For others, full medical knowledge may be required.

Evaluate the needs of your loved one before contacting the provider and discussing your options. The level of care offered varies greatly, from weekly visits to live-in companion care. The home health care agency can explain your options and discuss pricing with you.

Medicare provides coverage for some home health care, depending on the specific needs of the senior involved. Any care you want beyond the coverage offered by Medicare or your own insurance company would have to be paid out of pocket. This can make it difficult to provide the level of care you sometimes want, but most companies are aware of this issue and can help you find a financing plan that works.

As the needs of the patient change, so does the providers arrangement. Be prepared for your home health care needs to increase, and be aware of the point where you will be interested in ending home health in favor of looking into a nursing home of some sort. Of course, most seniors prefer to stay in their own home as long as possible.

You may be able to keep home health care but may need to change providers. For example, if you start with an untrained companion provider basic cleaning and meal preparation services, you may at some point need to hire a nurse or nurse assistant to take care of the patient’s increased medical needs.

This is a good option for seniors who have minor difficulties performing the basic activities of daily living, like bathing and dressing themselves, but otherwise are healthy. For seniors that live far away from their family, they can help provide social interaction and interest to the lives of the senior.

Home health care is a good choice for many elderly people. It is, however, a complex decision that requires taking into account the finances available, the needs and wants of the senior, the availability and willingness of the family to provide care, and the potential future needs of the senior. By contacting them and discussing your situation and concerns, you can determine the best course of action for you and your family.

Hypnotherapy, Homeopathy and Acupuncture in Alternative Health Care

There are many alternative health care options including hypnotherapy, homeopathy, acupuncture and reflexology to name but a few.

During a hypnotherapy session the subject is put into a trance-like state by several different methods. The hypnotist then makes various suggestions in order to change the subject’s sensations, thoughts or behavior. The results vary from person to person, depending on their susceptibility – in many cases it can be very successful.

Homeopathic treatments are based on using very small amounts of a substance similar to that which may have caused the problem initially. This is said to stimulate the body’s own healing powers. This alternative therapy has its detractors but there is no doubt that it appears to work in some cases. This form of alternative health care has been around since the 18th century and has sometimes been described as ‘like cures like’.

Reflexology is an ancient Chinese form of alternative health care. Areas of the feet are manipulated with the therapist’s fingers and thumbs, not needles as with acupuncture. The therapist stimulates certain areas of the feet and this relates to corresponding parts of the body. It can be used to treat stress, chronic back pain and infertility for example.

Herbal remedies play a large part in alternative health care. There are hundreds of different types and they can be used to treat a wide range of disorders. However, care must be taken as they can react with conventional medicines. Many conventional medicines are, in fact based on herbs and plants. Digitalis (used for treatment of heart disease) comes from the foxglove and the painkiller Aspirin derives from willow bark. Herbal remedies are widely available from health food shops and come in the form of tablets, capsules, ointments, and teas amongst others. If your problem is more complicated it is possible to visit a practitioner. Take care when choosing a practitioner as anyone can set up as a herbal practitioner. Choose one who belongs to one of the professional bodies that regulate standards.

Ayurveda is another alternative health care tradition originating in India. With Ayurveda traditional herbal remedies are used in combination with yoga, massage, diet and meditation – a very holistic approach.

Many therapies including occupational, speech and physical can be carried out in the comfort of your own home. These therapies are invaluable for rehabilitation after a stroke or accident. Most medical insurance policies will support home health care.

Home health care is also available for mainstream patients. Qualified professionals can give help with pain management, changing dressings and care after illness or injury. The advantages are enormous – saving the time and expense involved in travelling to a suitable medical centre, preserving quality of life and privacy for example.

Studies have shown that patients receiving home health care recover more quickly than those who are cared for in institutions. A better atmosphere and the reassurance of being with family and friends all help the recovery process.

Lower Health Care Costs

Everyone is attacking the insurance companies and rightfully so. They have been asking for it every time they come up with another excuse to deny someone the care they need. They’ve become the evil in the industry when they put a policy in place to deny, deny, deny until the people who are entitled finally give up filling out form after form.

Of course, the American people are looking to the president to solve the problem. It doesn’t look as if the problem is anywhere close to being solved. In 2008, Obama said that making the American people buy their own insurance is like requiring the homeless to buy homes. In 2010, just two years later, the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act he enacted did that very thing and in 2012 it was upheld by the Supreme Court even though it was immediately challenged by a majority of the States in the U.S.

In all of this turmoil, I don’t hear too many people complaining about the cost of health care itself. I’m not saying I don’t hear people complaining at all. I’m saying that the squeaky wheel gets the attention and the squeaky wheel in all this is the complaint about insurance companies and what the president can do. Health care costs itself could use a little more attention.

When a visit to the ER for a broken wrist costs a thousand dollars, I think we’re talking about a health care system that is literally running away itself unchecked. Walk into a hospital and look on the wall for a menu, a price list or anything that other businesses are required to provide. You won’t walk into a restaurant and order before knowing what the cost will be. Why can the hospital get away with it?

So, you can’t control the insurance companies and you can’t control the mess the government is making. How about take matters in your own hands and start cutting health care costs yourself? It’s not that hard. All you need to know is that the options are available and be willing to use them.

First of all, cut down on the trips you make to the hospital or the doctor’s office. This does not apply to people who have ongoing conditions that require frequent doctor’s office visits. If that doesn’t apply to you, then by all means be your own doctor.

If you have a symptom, look it up on the internet. Go to the credible sites that offer solid advice. Webmd is at the top of my list. But, you should also look at a few others. Just like you might get a second or third opinion on serious medical conditions, go to several different sites and make sure they are all giving the same advice. Mayoclinic, Medicinenet and Healthline are some others that have articles written by doctors and you just might find the information you need.

Remember though, if you take your health care into your own hands, you are responsible for following the advice the right way and using your own discretion if you happen to have a condition that precludes you from taking said advice. In a legal slap happy world, people love putting blame on others when they really only have themselves to blame. Quit being part of the problem, looking for that easy paycheck, and become part of the solution.

Cutting down on hospital or doctor’s office visits also means that you need to stock up on certain supplies and have them in your house or in your car at all times. Make yourself a kit of common medical items that you might possibly need for non-emergency situations. Bandaids, gauze, tape, peroxide, wound cleaners and anything else that you can imagine that will make your kit complete. Make a smaller kit of only the essentials for your pocketbook or book bag.

If there is a symptom that doesn’t require emergency attention and you have tried to look it up or you are unsure of what to do, go to a clinic. That’s why they are there. Clinics offer low cost solutions to getting medical advice. But you might get offered a prescription or a treatment that you can’t afford. Don’t hesitate to ask for alternatives. You’d be surprised how effective alternative health care treatments can be.

In the case that a trip to the hospital or the doctor’s office is necessary, there are still great ways to cut down on health care costs. The first thing you need to know is that health care does not have to cost as much as it does. Keep in mind that it’s a business. The insurance companies look at it like a business. The doctors and the hospitals run it like a business. So, treat it like a business!

If you have to go to the hospital, challenge the bill when you get it. Take it to the business office and negotiate it down. There is a sizable margin of wiggle room and you have every right to ask for it. Most of the time, you’ll get a reduced cost without even an argument. When they do argue, don’t take “no” for an answer. Climb the ladder of supervisors until you get to the decision maker. You will find that behind the closed doors is a much nicer person willing to give you a highly reduced hospital bill.

If you require surgery, treatment or any health care that will be set in the future, negotiate the bill upfront. Just like negotiating the hospital bill that you’ve already received, you can negotiate future health care costs as well. Climb the ladder to the decision maker and ask them what they can do for you. If insurance companies can get discounts of up to forty percent, then why shouldn’t you be entitled to the same?

Insurance companies aren’t designed with you in mind. They are money-making factories put in place to take your money and hope that they never have to pay. Looking to the government for the solution really isn’t doing anyone any good. When the government is required to find a solution, they have to find one that fits all shapes and sizes for all of its constituents. A task that is nearly impossible.

Take matters in your hands when you can and make sure you follow through when you make that decision. You just might live longer anyway. After all, you should be able to figure out what’s best for you and possibly keep yourself out of the hospital or the doctor’s office altogether.

Private Health Care Preferred Over Public Plans

As the economy becomes unstable and an obvious inflation seems forthcoming, it is the wise consumer who considers private health care. With the growing pollution across the globe with the ozone layer fast depleting, consumers are easily exposed to the ultraviolet rays and adverse pollutants in the air or waters. Hence, the immune system of the body is frequently attacked and weakened; without the appropriate healthcare, one’s health can deteriorate very quickly.

Public care plan

Although many governments offer some basic health care plans to their citizens, there may not be enough facilities to cater to the large group of the consumers. Public medical facilities are usually crowded every day with public medical providers being overworked and underpaid.

There may not be enough qualified and well trained public medical staff to offer the proper health care to the public. Some public care plans only cater to certain categories of society such as the orphans, widows, senior citizens and handicapped. Hence, the poor and unemployed may not get to enjoy the subsidized or free health care; they would need to resort to private care plans for their health which can be quite costly.

Variety

Working consumers are strongly advised to consider private health insurance for themselves although they may be covered by their companies; however, many companies purchase the minimum level of health care for their employees in a cost saving endeavor. The basic of health care plans is usually the preferred insurance plan by companies for their employees which covers annual basic health checks, common colds and influenzas.

But there are many areas of health that require to be covered in case one falls seriously ill. Private medical coverage can cover the cost of hospitalization in serious health issues such as operations and long term convalescence. There would be more choices of professional medical care such as specialists and surgeries at the best hospitals with the best medical facilities.

Different private insurance offers different scopes of coverage which would be reflected in the premium quantum. A private health care policy can cover any health aspect that is desired by the consumer as long as the insurance provider is willing to undertake it. That coverage would be computed as a viable undertaking by the insurance company which is translated into a feasible premium to the consumer. It is up to the consumer to dictate the terms of health care coverage until a satisfied plan is accepted with an affordable premium.
